Tiny Core Linux is a minimalist Linux system focusing on providing a base system with BusyBox, FLTK and other minimalist software. TCL's lead developer, Robert Shingledecker converses through an open development model in forums such as freenode channel - [irc://irc.freenode.net/tinycorelinux #tinycorelinux] to refine and test the 10Mb core and its extensions.
Design philosophy
The developers describe TCL as "a nomadic ultra small desktop capable of booting from cdrom, pendrive, or frugally from a hard drive." As of version 1.4, the core is designed to run primarily in RAM but with 4 distinct modes of operation:
*"Cloud" or Internet mode - A "testdrive" mode using a built-in appbrowser GUI to explore extensions from an online application extension repository loaded into RAM only for the current session.
*PPR/TCZ - A "Persistent Personal Repository" mode for Tiny Core Extensions downloaded and run from a storage partition but kept as symbolic links in RAM.
*PPR/TCE - Another "Persistent Personal Repository" mode for Tiny Core compressed files downloaded and kept on a small storage partition and extracted to RAM as needed.
*PPI/TCE - A "Persistent Personal Installation" which installs applications onto a Linux partition like a more typical Linux installation.
